Fireside Mental Health PLLC is located in Asheville, NC, and provides outpatient psychiatric medication management for adults. We offer in-person appointments at our South Asheville office, with telehealth visits also available for patients located in North Carolina.
Our philosophy is pretty simple: mental health care should feel less like a cold waiting room and more like pulling up a chair with someone who actually listens.
Care at Fireside is collaborative, trauma-informed, LGBTQIA+ affirming, and grounded in real life. That means we’ll talk about medications when they make sense, but we’ll also talk about sleep, stress, relationships, work, identity, past experiences, what has helped before, what absolutely has not helped, and what feels doable for you right now.
You don’t have to show up already knowing exactly what you need. You also don’t have to be “all in” on medication to start a conversation. A lot of people feel unsure, nervous, skeptical, or hesitant about medication, especially if past experiences with mental health care left them feeling dismissed, judged, pressured, or misunderstood. If that sounds familiar, I’m glad you’re here. We can slow things down, talk through your concerns, and figure out what feels right for you without pressure or judgment.
Meet your provider:

Heather Strauss, PA-C (she/her/hers)
Psychiatric Physician Assistant
Medication Management
I’m a licensed physician assistant based out of Asheville, NC with 13 years of clinical experience, providing outpatient psychiatric medication management for adults.
My style is warm, curious, and down-to-earth. I care a lot about making mental health treatment feel less intimidating and more collaborative.
I work especially well with people who want a provider who will take them seriously, explain things clearly, and not make them feel judged, rushed, or talked down to.
My approach looks at the full picture: symptoms, history, sleep, stress, nutrition, movement, relationships, identity, trauma, life transitions, work, school, and what is actually realistic in your life.
Medication can be helpful, but it is never the whole story. Sometimes medication is part of the plan. Sometimes the first step is education, support, ruling things out, or making sense of what you’ve been experiencing. We’ll figure that out together.
I also believe care works best when your support system is connected. With your permission, I’m happy to collaborate with your therapist or other members of your care team so we can make sure everyone is working together to support you.
Outside of work, I’m happiest when I’m getting outside or spending time with my family. I love mountain biking, weight lifting, standup paddle boarding, and hanging out with my husband and our two rescue Great Danes.

Who Fireside may be a good fit for
Fireside may be a good fit if you are looking for mental health care that is:
Collaborative
We make decisions together. I’ll bring clinical knowledge, and you bring your lived experience.
Medication-curious or medication-hesitant friendly
You don’t have to be sure you want medication. We can talk through options, concerns, side effects, alternatives, and what feels right for you.
LGBTQIA+ affirming
Your identity, relationships, body, autonomy, and lived experience are respected here. You should not have to educate your provider just to receive basic respect.
Trauma-informed
Care should feel safe, steady, and respectful. We’ll move at a pace that makes sense and prioritize choice, trust, and collaboration.
Whole-person focused
Mental health does not happen in a vacuum. We’ll look at sleep, stress, relationships, lifestyle, medical factors, work, school, and the messy real-life stuff that affects how you feel.
Team-based when helpful
With your permission, I’m glad to coordinate with your therapist or other members of your care team so your support feels connected rather than siloed.
Clear and honest
I’ll explain medication options in plain language, including possible benefits, risks, side effects, alternatives, and cost considerations whenever possible.
